Hedgehog Fun

Today we read a book called 'Hedgehog Fun'. It showed us how to make hedgehogs out of fruit. After we had read the book we made the prickles. It was fun and they tasted yummy.

I Am Learning to Draw Sunflowers

We planted sunflower seeds. They are beginning to grow. We drew a sunflower to show what we hope will grow on our plants.

I Am Learning to Retell a Story

We read a story called the 'Roller Coaster Ride' today. Then we had to put the pictures into the right order to retell the story.

"I could put the pictures in the right order. First you have to read the story or you don't know what happens".

I Am Learning To Tell Add Details To My Writing

I am learning to add details to my writing.  

I can write when something happened.

"I can write about what happened.  I can write the day it happened too.  I can use the day cards to help me write the day.  I can check on the whiteboard too."

Blob Bugs

We used paint to paint three blobs, then we squashed our paper in half. When it was dry we added legs, wings, antennae and eyes.

I Am Learning to Tell The Time

We have made clocks at school. We are learning to tell o'clock and half past times using our clocks. It is fun.

"My clock says 2 o'clock. It is easy to tell o'clocks, next I will learn half past times".

My Art Exhibition Masterpiece

This term we painted pictures for the 

Elm Park School Art Exhibition 2015.

The focus of our artwork was experimenting with different painting techniques, blending and shading colours together and creating repeating patterns.

To create our 'flower masterpiece' we practised mixing different shades of the same colour to create the wavy lines.  Then we used black vivid to create a repeating pattern.  We had fun putting our pictures together to create a whole flower - this was the best part!

Reading Term 3

I Am Learning About Root Words.

I can find a root word and I can make more words using different endings - s, ing, ed.

"Sometimes it's still tricky to find the root words.  I am learning to write the different endings on the words."

Writing Term 3

Writing Progressions 1P:
I am learning to

• add some detail to my writing
• choose words to make my writing more interesting

We wrote about about a Kapa Haka Performance that we watched in the auditorium during Māori Language Week.  First we wrote 2 sentences and then the next day we added some more writing to make our stories more interesting.

"I like to write about being at school and all the things I like to do.  I can use the abcd cards to help me spell the tricky words.  I am a good writer."

100 Days Smarter!

On the 23rd July 2015 Room 5 celebrated 100 days of school.  

We had a small class celebration, made crowns and wrote about our favourite things to do at school.

We are now 100 days smarter!!!

Reading Term 2

I am learning to identify question marks, exclamation marks, full stops, commas and capital letters.

"This is an exclamation marker.  It means you're shouting or somebody's shouting in the story." Holly

I am learning to make groups within 5.

Reading Term 1

I am learning to make the first sound in new words.

  I can look at the first letter and make the sound.  I can look at the picture to help me too.

Maths Term 1

I am learning the numbers from 0 to 10.  It can be tricky sometimes because I keep forgetting the names of the numbers 4, 7 and 9.  My friends can help me.
